With anxiety at epidemic levels among our children, Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents offers a contrarian yet effective approach to help children and teens push through their fears, worries, and phobias to ultimately become more resilient, independent, and happy.

How do you manage a child who gets stomachaches every school morning, who refuses after-school activities, or who is trapped in the bathroom with compulsive washing? Children like these put a palpable strain on frustrated, helpless parents and teachers. And there is no escaping the problem: One in every five kids suffers from a diagnosable anxiety disorder.

Unfortunately, when parents or professionals offer help in traditional ways, they unknowingly reinforce a child’s worry and avoidance. From their success with hundreds of organizations, schools, and families, Reid Wilson, PhD, and Lynn Lyons, LICSW, share their unconventional approach of stepping into uncertainty in a way that is currently unfamiliar but infinitely successful. Using current research and contemporary examples, the book exposes the most common anxiety-enhancing patterns—including reassurance, accommodation, avoidance, and poor problem solving—and offers a concrete plan with 7 key principles that foster change. And, since new research reveals how anxious parents typically make for anxious children, the book offers exercises and techniques to change both the children’s and the parental patterns of thinking and behaving.

This book challenges our basic instincts about how to help fearful kids and will serve as the antidote for an anxious nation of kids and their parents.

Our 3 year old was having a lot of anxiety in social situations. Although the age this book targets is for older children, I felt that the principles and exercises can still be applied no matter what age. It helped me recognize my own tendencies to perpetuate his anxiety. After a month we already see major improvements. I feel like my parenting is more empowering now and he definitely has more confidence which makes my heart so happy. I’m glad we started to address this early. So thankful for this book!

This book is amazing for EMDR clinicians. The language in the book is easy to understand but also gives depth. It also gives you a step by step scripts. Overall I would highly recommend this book for therapist and is definitely worth the money!

The only thing I would give constructive criticism on is I wish they also made a spiral bound version. This would make it easier to print of the script easier. Although i feel the flow of this book is really good, I wish the scripts were more separate from the reading text. By doing this it would make it easier to make copies when your going from “client to client”. Also maybe providing visuals aids might be helpful in understanding some of these materials.

I've recently started seeing kids for anxiety in my psychotherapy practice, and I have a 9 year old who has anxiety. GET THIS BOOK. I became interested when I participated in an anxiety certification in which Lynn Lyons presented. She's insightful, honest, and offers clear guidance about how to help parents and kids work together to overcome anxiety. There's no judgement in the book, just identifying likely scenarios (that I recognized in my own experience) and ways to move into managing anxiety from high-jacking your lives.

I started to providing EMDR therapy without realizing the importance of somatic interventions. Big mistake! Once I integrated the body my clients made a lot more progress. This book gave me a lot of ideas on how to further my practice but it also helped to validate what I was already doing. Sometimes as clinicians we utilize a certain intervention having no idea what it’s called or why we do it. This book helped me to realize that I am on the right track.

Understanding and experiencing the somatic approach is best done through the workshops, but the book holds up as a reference much like Jim Knipe's 'Toolbox.' This is a well written and very logically organized introduction for integrating two deeply important therapeutic modalities. I love how clearly it is written, taking sometimes complex material and making it fairly straightforward. They address some of the critical issues EMDR therapists pour into as they develop: complex trauma & dissociation, cultural sensitivity, chronic pain & illness, and the importance of therapist self care to avoid Burnout. If there were a therapist career syllabus for what to read on "How to build oneself into a quality trauma therapist", this book would be on that list. I am very happy to have it in my library of important works, and will be sharing it as an EMDR Consultant with my consultees! Thank you for providing this valuable resource to the EMDR community.

This book was recommended to me in a peaceful parenting group. I had finally realized that my daughters rigidity was due to anxiety not her just being “difficult”. It broke my heart since I know what living with anxiety is like and didn’t want that for her. I tried and failed to do things to help her. This book was an amazing resource to explain why what I was doing wasn’t working and what I could do instead. I started implementing the suggestions in this book during the summer and could not be happier with the change in both my daughter and I. There is a drastic decrease in stand offs and meltdowns (from both of us!). I am so grateful for the positive changes this book has brought to our home. Even my four year old has used the strategies to calm herself down....just from hearing the conversations between my older daughter and I! I feel like we can breathe again! I can’t recommend it enough!

I am a clinical social worker who specializes in treating pediatric anxiety and OCD. I recommend this book to parents of anxious children. Parenting anxious kids is counter intuitive because parents naturally want to comfort and protect their fearful children. But providing protection and reassurance and allowing children to avoid uncomfortable feelings only makes anxiety worse. This book is also a great resource for parents who are anxious themselves. The program is clearly presented and easy to follow, with an emphasis on positive role modeling by parents, identifying and removing accommodation of avoidant behavior, and helping both kids and parents learn to tolerate uncertainty and uncomfortable emotions. I particularly like the information on helping anxious kids become more flexible. Both Dr. Wilson and Lynn Lyons are recognized as experts in the treatment of anxiety.

The authors describe specific strategies that unable children and teens diminish avoidance behaviors. "Moving toward" fears deflates the power of anxiety triggers. Edited volumes tend to be a mixed bag, with some worthwhile chapters, and others that are not particularly helpful. Malchiodi and Crenshaw's book is a rare exception, in that chapter after chapter is full of useful information for therapists working with a variety of child and adolescent clients with attachment issues. The strength of this volume is its interdisciplinary nature, drawing in contributors from play therapy, the creative arts therapies, neuroscience, and psychodynamic psychotherapy, to name a few. The chapters by Richard Gaskill and Bruce Perry, and by Eliana Gil are particularly useful, authoritative, and clear. Therapists working in the trenches with severely damaged young people will especially find much to inform their work within these pages.

These authors really get anxiety and the powerful way that parents can influence how their children learn to manage anxiety. And that's' one of their well articulated points - the goal is not to eliminate the anxiety but to learn how to manage it and even use it constructively. I bought this book after experiencing too much anxiety from my two toddlers, ages 1 and 2, regarding bugs, new people, and water/swimming. Neither are to the point of having a real problem but I want to nip this anxiety in the bud before we do have problems.

This book is structured toward older children (or adults) who do have real problems but the principles are incredibly helpful for anyone who experiences worry and anxiety. The most helpful principles I've learned is to expect worry and that it's normal in certain situations so condemning someone who feels anxious is very unhelpful. Less anxious people are not free from everyday worries but they know how to talk to their worry, so that's what an anxious person just needs to learn as well. I've also learned that worry pushes for avoidance and inaction so I am on high alert for those types of reactions in both myself and my kids.

I have responded much better toward my own worries after reading this book and am less surprised/upset when my kids express worry because I'm learning to manage/work with worry rather than eradicate it or hope it just disappears. I'm thankful to have found this book while my kids are still so young.

An amazing book that gave me literally dozens of ideas on how to help my grandson. I thought I was doing everything right ... and I was doing most things wrong! I'd written a book about my grandson ("Grammie Rules: 49 reasons to spend time with your grandkids"), but I was doing so many things wrong to help him grow and deal with issues. The book clearly described my behavior and gave me "how to" instructions to correct it. Fabulous! And it has worked.

Malchiodi and Crenshaw have edited a wonderful resource for Play Therapists and Play Therapist-Supervisors that firmly explains how the Creative Arts Therapies and Play Therapy engage a client's somatosensory systems actively and facilitate a client's development of a more secure attachment and more effective regulation of both affect and behavior. A Case Vignette describing each therapy "in action" is included.
I highly recommend this book as it is clearly written, well organized and immediately applicable to one's clinical work. The inclusion of research on the impact of trauma on the developing brains of children and the neurobiological power of play and the creative arts deepens the therapeutic applications. The chapters on the clinical use of these therapies with at-risk populations such as foster children, cross-cultural adoptees and children with developmental trauma disorders is most welcome. I am most grateful that this valuable resource is now available!

The authors do a compelling job explaining that creative, experiential, sensory based therapies stimulate the right brain and help reestablish positive and secure attachment and should be considered the most effective approaches to use with children for whom it comes naturally. Attachment theory and recent brain research is interwoven with detailed clinical approaches including applications to specific populations. A variety of therapeutic approaches from expert clinicians are detailed out in case vignettes giving the reader the sense of being present in the therapy room and witnessing the healing process as it unfolds. Malchiodi and Crenshaw should be commended for their collaborative efforts that have resulted in a wonderful book that is sure to become a staple among both art and play therapists.

Creative Arts and Play Therapy for Attachment Problems is a wonderful book that threads theory, brain research, clinical vignettes and practical interventions for working with children and families from the attachment perspective. In my work as a play therapist, I have found this book helpful in providing a framework for working with children and families using attachment as the foundation. The many contributors to the book create diversity of approaches and yet the chapters also compliment each other offering a variety of creative approaches that include music, theraplay, drama, arts and culture (to name a few). Well done to the editors, David Crenshaw and Cathy Malchiodi, two well-respected play therapists in the field. Thank you for putting this wonderful book together!

Cathy Malchiodi and David Crenshaw, two giants in the fields of Art and Play Therapy respectively have co-edited a wonderful book that illustrates the healing power of these modalities for children with attachment disorders. By utilizing a total of 27 contributors our knowledge of this topic has been significantly enhanced. By weaving together theory, research, and case studies this work offers a comprehensive rationale of the value of not only play and art therapy in particular in providing a potent curative experience for children, but also examines the importance of music, dance and filial therapies among others. This work also provides cutting edge information on the neurobiological role of play. The writers do an exceedingly clear job of presenting the tenets of attachment and the application of such in real world therapeutic situations. The utilization of these approaches in working with at risk populations makes this not only a major academic work but one that has great clinical utility. Overall the editors and contributors are to be heartily commended for providing the therapeutic community with such a meaningful and well written book

This is a great resource for parents who may not be clear about what causes a child to be anxious. Sometimes its how we respond to their behavior that strengthens the anxiety. Lynn Lyons is amazing and she teaches her patients to "talk back" to the fear and gives them a clear and concise message that they don't need to and will not listen to the fear. She helps kids get back to doing the fun things kids need to be doing and not worrying about what "might" happen! Highly recommend this book!!!
