I have a son with ADHD. Recently he has become like another child. Angry, frustrated, sad, embarrassed. When I saw those signs I immediately started looking for help. As things progressed with him, I was getting no where as far as how to help him and was running on fumes trying to figure out what to do for myself and him. I’m a big reader and just happened to come across this book and boy am I happy I did. This book saved my relationship with my son. It has helped me know what to ask for with his school and how to speak to him about his ADHD, along with tons of advice and guidance. It’s still a long road ahead but this time I have a “roadmap” to how my sons brain works and how and why he does certain things etc. I’m gonna tell you- it isn’t easy. But when you stick to everything and just make some slight changes so your child can understand and not be afraid or embarrassed of his disorder… and that makes me happy. I recommend this book to any parent with a child who has ADHD. It has literally saved my relationship with my son but more importantly- my son is back to smiling and being himself again. I don’t know what I would have done without the help of this book.

My son has been diagnosed for almost a decade. We knew very early he had ADHD. I'm a nurse and coordinated a multidisciplinary care approach. I thought I understood ADHD. After this book I realized just how much I didn't know. It was a game changer. I will be asking every adult in his life to read this. When I finish my nurse practitioner degree this year I will recommend it to patients without hesitation.

Wish we had this when I was a child. Back in the late 80’s early 90’s it was not very common/popular as it is today. My mom and I are sharing the book because I read slow and the more information she has the more she can try to connect better with me. I also bought my best friend a copy since she has never had an ADHD friend. This book is very helpful and beyond relatable. These stories and techniques are so expressive and helpful that it’s making my family and friend and myself see things in a different way. I’m almost convinced having ADHD isn’t a bad thing according to this book. It explains why our actions may be so OCD, anxious, always being told NO, why we can’t slow down with the snap of a finger. Especially, love the part explaining not being heard because that’s still a struggle with me. I highly recommend this book even for adults. I may have graduated and still in and out of college but it helps give you answers to why you do things a certain way and you process things compared to others. 5 plus stars if possible.

It’s like a tour inside my kids brain! Very interesting and enlightening it helped me deal and understand a LOT about him. Off course there are still chapters that don’t apply to a 5 year old (my son) but it gives us an insight of how it will probably be when he goes to school. I totally recommend it!

I am a parent of two boys with ADHD. One of the many frustrations I have is with comments from family and teachers who do not understand these kids at all. This book is such a great explanation of everything ADHD. secondly, it provides a simple, clear approach in five steps to address your child's common issues with ADHD. It also addresses problems in school, with electronics, friends, how to manage emotions, strategies for executive functioning difficulties. There is variety with how the information is presented, with quotes, stories, charts, cartoons, and diagrams to keep it interesting for the reader with different reading and learning styles, consistent the topic of the book! the information is evidence-based and there are many references and resources in the back of the book. A must-have resource! The author is so compassionate and is truly an asset to the ADHD world.

An amazing read - every time I read it I pick up something new to consider or have an ah-ha moment. I’ve read so many ADHD books to help raise my son to the best of my ability. This one I love because it has very practical, use immediately techniques and shares experiences you can immediately relate to and consider. So well written, easy to take in. I’ve bought two additional ones for friends whose little ones were recently diagnosed as “gifts”.

This frustrated, lost mom is very thankful for this book. I am learning. I received a review copy of this book from Dr. Sharon Saline, and I will tell you that I was very impressed by her book. While I realized I was somewhat ignorant of what ADHD truly was, her book helped explain it in a real and practical manner where I learned something. Everything she shared including the examples helped me understand it better. The one thing I found in the book that really surprised me was some of the things she teaches are very similar to what I've learned in trauma healing. Maybe people with ADHD have a lot to teach the rest of us. I'm so thankful I came across her book and read it.

As a family therapist, I see parents thirsting for concrete tools to help their kids. Many books about ADHD are full of worthwhile ideas; however, few tell parents exactly HOW to put those ideas to work. Dr. Saline's book is an oasis in the desert for these parents. She gives practical, hands-on advice, telling parents exactly what to do and say to show understanding and provide effective guidance to their children. Her "5 C's" system is a simple yet powerful approach that parents can adopt. By starting with "Self-Control" as her first "C" she enables parents to tackle the way they get triggered emotionally. After applying the "Stop, Think and Act" directive first to themselves, they are better able to teach those same skills to their children. She not only explains to parents of ADHD children the importance of "Compassion, Consistency and Collaboration," but shows them exactly how to put those essential qualities into practice. Finally, her last "C", "Celebrating" our children, helps keeps parents focused on the positive qualities of their children and mindful of how best to show them our pride in them and admiration for them -- through noticing and commenting on small successes rather than blanket statements about how great they are. The book is a must for parents of children with ADHD, and Dr. Saline's advice on helping children deal with their strong emotions makes it a great resource for parents of any child. Finally, as a therapist I have started using Dr. Saline's advice to guide the parents with whom I work, and they are seeing measurable positive results from the tips I have provided.

As a clinician and parent, I am thrilled with Dr. Saline’s new book. She has done a wonderful job of synthesizing complex material and presenting this information in accessible language and most importantly with kindness, empathy, and smarts. Many parents struggle with understanding their child’s behavior and therefore have difficulty empathizing with them and feeling empowered to help them navigate the challenges they face. This book both offers a road map for parents and wonderful stories from the mouths of young people engaged in understanding their brains. I am particularly thrilled that she has offered very clear suggestions for parents and kids to help them create new patterns with their thinking, feeling and behaviors.

What a great book! As a parent of two ADHD children, I wish that I'd had it earlier. It makes sense of so much of my experience. I'm sure that many parents will find the practical advice very helpful, but what really moved me was how it explained the ADHD brain and the subjective experience of children with ADHD. So many of the struggles and frustrations that I went through are illuminated here.

Also--the book is extremely readable, something for which I'm very grateful. I pretty much got through the whole thing in about two days

Finally, even though I found this book a little bit late, I have another child at home who does not have ADHD. I have to say that one of the beautiful things about the book is that the empathy and way of thinking that it fosters is extremely helpful to parents of all children. As I was reading through the chapters, I found myself thinking of my other child as well.

More than ‘What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew,” Dr. Saline’s exceedingly utilitarian book tell you/us deeply insightful lessons about relationship management that stretch far beyond the consternation of families and parents troubled by ADHD challenges. It’s already a classic because it provides so much value for conflict resolution not only with ADHD children but also between parents themselves for marital disputes, and reaches even into corporate halls with engagement patterns for balanced executive management. Through her sequence of insightful processes for dispute resolution, she reaches out from the page to embrace the reader for the larger picture of respect, compassion, trust, and negotiated solutions to build lasting, more workable relationships. It's a relationship wisdom-book with lessons we all "wish to know" and should be set as required reading for providers, parents, and anyone with management responsibilities.

I thought this book had a great deal of fantastic advice for parents, but what was even more apparent was the deep feeling Dr. Saline clearly has for her readers - incredible empathy for the kids and parents about whom she writes. I was honestly moved to tears in the last chapter as she was sending families on their way with kind words of understanding for what it’s really like to grapple day to day with the struggles of an ADHD family. As a professional specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, I am heartened to read a book about ADHD that is practical, substantive, and engaging. Most people with ADHD can't sustain interest in books about ADHD. This one is different. Dr. Saline does an amazing job of weaving important scientifically based research and knowledge about ADHD with compassionate and effective strategies for helping kids and teens with ADHD thrive. From her clinical work, Dr. Saline clearly knows the psychological risk factors of low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety that can too often develop when kids with ADHD are misunderstood and parented from traditional models. I am hopeful that this will be a parenting guide that will make a difference for ADHD kids and their parents. As a parent of kids with ADHD, I know all too well, when our children are doing well, we breathe and sleep easier, and ANY help along the way is appreciated. While there are no easy answers, Dr. Saline offers practical help parents and kids need and hope that there is light at the end of the tumultuous tunnel. I highly recommend her book!!

With so many books out there now, I find it so hard to pick the right one that is clear, thoughtful, insightful, and packed full of easy to understand information for how to interact with kids with ADHD. (And honestly, what parents have a ton of time to read all those books?) Dr. Sharon Saline's book was everything I wanted and more. Her years of experience working with clients is evident with each chapter. I particularly love how this book highlights the perspective of the CHILD living with ADHD - something I feel we don't see often enough in literature. This is a must read for parents and an incredible resource for other professionals working with people with ADHD.
